Diablo Canyon Power Plant Seismic Survey: Worth the Risk?

Diablo Canyon Power Plant Seismic Survey

Diablo Canyon Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County, California

The Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) is a nuclear power facility owned and operated by PG&E. The facility, located on the coast in San Luis Obispo County, California, produces approximately 10 percent of all electricity generated in California, and enough energy to meet the needs of more than 3 million Northern and Central Californians.

In an effort to gain a better understanding of the complex geology and fault zones of the region, PG&E will soon be conducting a High Energy Seismic Survey off the coast of DCPP. The survey, which was called for by the state, is scheduled to begin in November and is expected to last approximately 12 days.

The controversial research project involves towing a quarter-mile wide array of powerful underwater air cannons that emit approximately 250 decibel blasts several times a minute for several consecutive days.

The environmental impact of the seismic blasts is of significant concern because it could potentially result in the injury or death of a long list of ocean life, including the threatened southern sea otter.

Ensuring human health and safety is imperative — but at what cost.
